Factotum
I don’t typically feel obligated to make comics about going to movies as there are plenty of other contenders out there who already have the market cornered, but I guess it just wouldn’t be comics about my life if it didn’t at some point include something I do more often than I go to shows (more due to the town I live in’s refusal to get it together and give a shit about punk rock than personal choice). So here you damn go.
Victoria and I went and saw Factotum tonight, and we both absolutely loved it. It encapsulated perfectly the mood and feel and pacing of Bukowski’s writing, something I’m very surprised to see on screen. I don’t know if America is going to like it, though. It’s the type of movie that’ll get some Oscar nominations as a gesture to show that the Oscar board is still “in touch”, but I’d be surprised if it actually won anything. Bastard world.
If you haven’t read anything by Bukowski before, I strongly recommend you put down those lame Palanhiuk novels and pick up Ham on Rye, which is one of the best books ever printed. Booya.
We also saw the Departed a couple days ago, which is going to be the one to beat for Best Movie of 2006 if you ask me. The Departed will also be nominated for some Oscars, but will actually win them, not necessarily because it’s deserved (though it is), but more as a gesture from the Oscar board to Scorcese for having ignored him all these years even though he fucking made Taxi Driver AND Goodfellas AND Casino AND a hundred other movies that blew boring mainstream fluff crap like Titanic out of the fucking water (no pun intended).
