Wizard World II
It's true, comic conventions not only see tons of artists crossing the line between sex appeal and sexism, but it sees them stopping, turning around, and pissing on the line as well.
Tons of examples everywhere you went, too. You had tables in Artist's Alley (the uber-small press section of the con, basically) devoted exclusively to naked female superheroes. You had indie comics full of barely-dressed women with their stuff hanging out. You had the Marvel and DC sections right up front with their stuff that was just as bad.
Don't misunderstand me, now. I'm an outspoken proponent of the female form and all its wordly splendor, but this is just ridiculous. This was everywhere, and it was not only lacking context, but it would actually go against context!
Let me explain:
I authored a comic once upon a time where there was some female near-nudity. If course, the comics in general dealt specifically with sex (and relationships and love and trust and ethics and blah blah blah, you get the point). As such, I would consider any sex appeal found there to be relevant to the story, or at least expected given the subject matter (also, Joe Dunn's art is just the most amazing shit ever, and there's nary a line he could cross that would turn me off... so to speak).
Then you have, let's say, a notable mainstream female superhero. Take your pick. Let's say she's super strong, she's tough, she's a badass. Why doesn't she have muscles? Why is she wearing so much makeup? Why, even in the middle of a brutal fight, is she still so pretty? Not to mention the skin-tight leotard with the not-so-inconspicuous camel-toe and thong, the breasts that would put Pamela Anderson to shame, the auspicious lack in muscle or tone...
How does a Barbie doll lift a car over her head?
Obviously, there are answers to these questions, and they lie mostly in that comic fanboys are developmentally stunted perverts who get off on chicks in capes, and that the sex angle is basically the only way you can sell a strong woman to guys like that. What a weird industry to be a part of.
