The Mexican Border
I stand by this. We have a lot of problems here in America (a number of which themselves are creating big problems for the rest of, you know, Earth), and maybe it's just me, but it seems that any time these problems start becoming seriously addressed here (i.e. whenever the president's popularity starts dwindling), we're thrown off track by something either only marginally important (U.S. immigration policy) or downright trivial (making it illegal to burn American flags).
Are illegal immigrants from Mexico destroying America? No. Do I believe people should have to sign the guest book before moving to our country? Sure. But I also recognize how complicated this issue is.
I have a friend, for instance, who's husband moved here illegally from Mexico. No, he wasn't trying to cash in on our lucrative job market detailing lawns and cleaning hotel rooms. His daughter developed cervical cancer, and the only way he could get her treated was to get her here. Imagine you were faced with this problem. Either you break the law or your daughter dies. I know what I'd do.
It's not hard to believe that this has become a big controversy as of late, as Americans are easily distracted and prone to racism. And I'm not writing this to expand upon the debate of immigration policy, I'm writing this to end it.
It doesn't matter.
Do you get that? It doesn't matter, and our country will have to be in considerably better shape before it does.
